GOVERNOR'S CORNER
December 2022

Wow! How is it already December? The first six months of the Rotary year have FLOWN by! A most sincere THANK YOU to all of the Clubs and individuals who supported our Night for Ukraine event. Over 250 people attended and enjoyed amazing Ukrainian food and entertainment. I am proud to say that we have netted over $100,000! We have sent $25,000 to the Kiev region to help rebuild a school and $25,000 to the Kharkiv region to help build shelters for the many of hundreds of currently homeless residents. We will also be sending $50,000 to The Rotary Foundation.

Speaking of The Rotary Foundation, you should be receiving soon (if you haven’t already) a form for you to make your personal gift to the Foundation. Rotary asks for a $100 per person gift, but I would just love to see every Rotarian in our district donate something - just whatever you feel comfortable doing. Remember, when you donate to the Annual Fund at The Rotary Foundation, 50% of that money returns to our district for us to give out to our Clubs for local grants.

This past month, I made a few more visits - Champion’s Paint n’ Sip fundraiser, a club visit in Newcomerstown, and made shoes for children in Uganda with the Rotaract Club of Salem. It was a great month, and I am looking forward to several upcoming Edible Auctions!Until next time, I hope that you and your family enjoy a wonderful holiday season. I’ll see you all in the new year!

DG Michelle

November Foundation month was kicked off with a fabulous District Event  -"A Night for Ukraine" just a few weeks ago. For those who were able to attend, the emotional and heartfelt evening will stay with us for a very long time.

We recognize that the dollars raised through this event will be used wisely to help the people of Ukraine - with our fellow Rotarians at the helm. The ensemble of speakers, guests in attendance, incredible Ukrainian food and entertainment, and the beautiful venue at St. George's Serbian Church created a truly memorable occasion for our District. We sincerely thank all our clubs in 6650 who were able to financial support the event and thank all who were a part of this meaningful day.

We decided to wait until just after Thanksgiving to launch this year's District Foundation Paul Harris Fellow Challenge since we just completed a big fundraiser earlier in the month.  The PHF Challenge mailing was intended to be in your mailboxes this past Monday - right after the Thanksgiving holiday - but our printer needed a few extra days to complete the job. Watch your mailboxes, as your letter will arrive any day!

There are several ways you can participate, which are outlined again in your letter this year. I will gladly help you navigate your way to the next Paul Harris Fellow level, assist with your matching points and how to award them, and/or help you complete the form. Please call or text me anytime with your questions.

Most of all, remember the tremendous impact the Rotary Foundation giving has in our local communities and throughout the world. A significant portion of our Foundation giving comes right back to D6650 in grants, and this is an important and impactful detail to remember.

Thank you, fellow Rotarians! We hope you continue your year-end giving through our Rotary District Foundation. For those who want to wait until 2023 to make a gift to D6650 Foundation, we will graciously accept those gifts, as well.

Sincerely yours,
Linda S. Fergason

Planting a pollinator garden at the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County is just the start of the Rotary Club of Warren’s Operation Pollination activities. The 10-by-10-foot garden was installed in June as Christine Cope was completing her presidency of the Warren club. Local monarch butterfly expert Susan Sexton of Youngstown advised on plant selection to draw and feed pollinators. Rotarians and members of AWL’s board and staff did the planting.
Cope is President and CEO of United Way of Trumbull County. She was building toward the pollination project throughout her Rotary presidency by sharing positive environmental news snippets during weekly club meetings and newsletter items, distributing seed packets, and inviting speakers to address topics related to Operation Pollination. The club is willing to start pollinator plots “anywhere we can as long as we have capacity,” Cope said. To her delight, a pending site is at Ultium Cells, the electric battery manufacturer in Lordstown. A company representative spoke at Cope’s President’s Night event about environmental responsibility and Ultium’s goal to grow a pollinator garden on land it owns. A collaboration began to germinate.
Cope describes herself as an environmentalist and nature lover. “I see habitat being taken away and its effects on wildlife,” she said. “All life on earth is dependent on [humans] changing course, in big or little ways.” As a photographer, she sees subtle changes in nature that can be captured through her lens. “When you’re out there, nothing is more beautiful,” she said. “We are stewards of this Earth. The harm we have done is what we must undo.”
She is encouraged by Operation Pollination and “the collaboration – we are all finding one another,” she said. Collaborators include master gardeners, landscapers (for their understanding of native plants), land banks, business leaders and educators.
What is your pollination story? Send information to Elayne Bozick at emsbozick@gmail.com for inclusion in a future District 6650 newsletter.

LOUISVILLE ROTARY
We celebrated the life of a long-time Rotarian, Ken Smith, with his wife and daughters today with a dedication of a bench and tree in his memory at Aljancic Park. A Rotarian since the 1970s, a popular teacher, and founder of the Rotary flag program in Louisville among many other activities, we will continue to put Service Above Self like our motto says and the way Ken lived his life.
We hope some time at the park, resting on the bench or sitting under the tree (in a few years) inspires you too!
