Governor’s Column (December 2018)
It is hard to believe that 2018 is quickly drawing to a close and that we are in the midst of the holiday hustle and bustle.   This also means that we are nearly half-way through our Rotary year!  I'm so pleased with the progress of our clubs and the district.  At the district level, we are planning for the Art Auction Foundation event on February 1, and DGN Linda Henderson is leading a strategic planning initiative for the district.   Soon, we will also be reviewing district by-laws/resolutions to keep them up to date with Rotary as we know it today.  At the club level, all of you are doing your part to "BE THE INSPIRATION" this year.   I have thoroughly enjoyed my club visits thus far and will visit two remaining clubs in early January 2019.  Thanks for all you are doing to provide "Service Above Self" in your communities and all that you do to further the ideals of Rotary.  I hope that you are all making a special effort to invite members of your community to join Rotary where we encourage others to join leaders, exchange ideas and take action.
As we look to the second half of the Rotary year, planning is underway for our District 6650/District 6690 joint district conference, "Better Together." to be held at the Hilton Columbus/Polaris on April 12-13, 2019.  I hope every district Rotarian will consider making an effort to attend.  More details will follow in January.  Additionally, I invite all District 6650 Rotarians to join me in Hamburg, Germany from June 1-5, 2019 as we "Capture the Moment" at the Rotary International Convention.  If you truly want to experience the global impact of our beloved organization, you need to attend a convention.  It will change your outlook on Rotary, your community and in the process have life-changing impact for you personally.
Thank you all for your efforts thus far for our "Wine Challenge" to support the End Polio Now initiative.  To date, you have raised collectively over $15,000 for the Rotary International Foundation.  Keep in mind that these donations are matched 2-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
As the days grow shorter and darker, remember the light that Rotary provides to the world.  As you gather with families to celebrate holidays in your own respective traditions, cherish Rotary's ideals as these are special gifts that we have all received through our membership in the world's foremost humanitarian organization.  Please accept my best wishes to each and every one of you and your families for a happy holiday season and a healthy and prosperous new year!  BE THE INSPIRATION!

District Rotary Foundation - Update
I hope your club has taken time to show the District video with Tim & Anna highlighting the ongoing projects in our District and around the world thanks to your generosity.
The Military Family Center is up and running in Louisville. This partnership provides a safe, welcoming environment for veterans, active-duty military, first responders, and their families, to have the support they need to cope with life’s challenges.
Unlike typical Rotary Foundation Global Grants, our District raised funds by partnering with Districts in India with whom we had previously helped. This Global Grant provided more than $100,000 for physical and occupational equipment thanks to donations from many clubs, generous Rotarian donors, and The Foundation. This was truly a global project in our back yard.
You can view the current and past informational videos with Tim and Anna here:
International Peace Project

Rotarians are well aware of a multitude of international projects such as clean water, literacy, and polio eradication we have gladly undertaken in our 110 year history. One important element of goals – the pursuit of peace through understanding – has been well served by our youth exchange programs and the establishment of the five Peace Universities and Ambassadorial Scholarships for example. Put into perspective, the goal of peace could be thought of as crucial, since without it all the programs involving the treatment of hunger, disease and education can barely be undertaken.
