DISTRICT GOVERNOR CORNER
OCTOBER 2022
Happy October! The first quarter of our Rotary year is complete!

As I write this, I am currently at our Zone Conference in Chattanooga. It is wonderful to enjoy the fellowship of Rotary again and to hear from Zone and International leaders. I am once again reminded of how inspiring it is to be a part of an international organization.

In September,  I had wonderful visits in New Philadelphia, Alliance, Massillon, Canal Fulton, Malvern, Boardman, Millersburg, Brookfield, Steubenville, Canfield, and East Palestine. I also had the honor of meeting all of our 8 inbound youth exchange students in Boardman. It never ceases to amaze me how much our Rotarians are getting done in our district! I am so honored to be serving as your District Governor this year.

The month of October is Polio Awareness Month with World Polio Day on October 24. With polio cases making international news, it is so important for us to be raising funds. I have asked all clubs to donate a minimum of $1,000 to the Polio Fund at The Rotary Foundation. I hope that all of you will join me in donating to this worthy effort.

You will be receiving invitations in the mail in the next couple of weeks about our upcoming “Night for Ukraine” event. Please note that the event date and venue has been changed due to a fire at our original venue. The event is now on Sunday, November 6 from 3-7pm at St. George’s Orthodox Church on Applegrove in Canton. Tickets are now on sale and available through the district website - www.Rotarydistrict6650.org. So far, 16 clubs have committed funds totalling $40,350 to this important event. Please consider helping us to reach our goal of $100,000 for Ukraine and Disaster Relief!

The buzz about Operation Pollination continues to build. District 6650 Governor Michelle Charles and her immediate predecessor, Steve Wilder, agreed to sign Pollinator Resolutions on behalf of the entire district. In response, clubs are signing Pollinator Pledges and imagining how they can have influence.
Starting now, clubs also may use the district 6650 newsletters as a place to celebrate successes, share strategies, and inspire others to join the movement.
Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation added the environment as a seventh Area of Focus in June 2020. That effort was led by the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group, which also supports Operation Pollination. The iconic monarch butterfly is an endangered species, a troubling sign as pesticide use, climate change and habitat loss also threaten bees, bats, beetles, and birds. Their struggles translate to declines in food crops and human health.
Operation Pollination may be a global initiative, but opportunities to engage in it are as close as your doorstep. No project is too small to be impactful.
When The Rotary Club of Cortland rededicated its Monarch Butterfly Garden on Sept. 20 at the Trumbull County Agriculture & Family Education Center, it demonstrated the power of commitment. Land for the ag center was donated by the Delphi Packard Company and developed by county commissioners to promote agriculture, education, gardening, and recreation. Rotarians serve on the building and grounds advisory committee. Ohio State University Extension and Trumbull Soil & Water Conservation District – two strong Operation Pollination partners – maintain offices there. Rotarians revitalized the butterfly garden with a grant from The Rotary Foundation and support from OSU Extension Master Gardeners.
The Rotary Club of Warren created a pollinator garden at the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County. The Rotary Club of Struthers planted pollinator gardens within the CASTLO Industrial Park that borders the communities of Campbell, Struthers, and Lowellville.
As The Rotary Club of Youngstown plans its first installation, members (led by District Governor 2024-25 nominee Elayne Bozick) are building a coalition of public and private partners to broaden the reach of Operation Pollination. Partners include Mill Creek MetroParks, First Energy, Mahoning Soil & Water Conservation District, Mahoning County Land Bank, Youngstown CityScape, and Bending Oak Permaculture Farm.
Reforestation and Operation Pollination are complementary efforts. So is the Trex program of recycling filmy plastic. Creating, restoring, and enhancing natural habitats is their common goal.
If your club has a story to share, then please send information to District 6650 Secretary Joan Cauley at rotarydistrict6650@gmail.com. Please refer to Operation Pollination in the subject line of your submission.

STRUTHERS ROTARY
President Christina Bohl Jackson presented a check to Officer Dalton Moore to assist in the purchase and training of the newest K-9 member of the Struthers Police Department, ‘Recon’. Struthers Rotary hosted a “Cash for a K-9” raffle over the summer to raise funds for the new K-9 officer. Recon is a Belgian Malinios/German Shepherd mix and is already trained in narcotics detection. Recon will be trained with Officer Moore over a 6-week period that includes obedience courses, vehicle and building search training and tracking methods. Much of the training will take place in real world settings like steel mills and abandoned or shuttered properties where they are trained to find explosives, narcotics and suspects or missing people. Recon is commanded in Dutch from their European pre-training and their human partners are trained to direct them using that language.
