Shoes, We are Making Shoes!

The Salem Rotary Club and CCCTC Rotaract Club held a shoe making party this month as part of the Sole Hope project.  They cut out patterns for shoes that will be shipped to Uganda.

This project provides shoes for children.  The shoes help to prevent the children from becoming infested with a parasite called “Jiggers.” The Jiggers infect the feet and make it painful or impossible to walk.  The shoes are made from jeans and tire treads.

Because of the black market, the shoes are sent in pieces to Uganda.  Local residents in Uganda, are employed to sew and attached the tire tread sole to the shoes. The completed shoes are distributed by teams who travel to villages, dig out the jiggers, wash and disinfect the child’s feet and provide them with shoes to prevent re-infection.
