November 2020

One of the things that I feel badly about is the way that we jump from Halloween into the Holiday Season.  It is as if Thanksgiving is just a day off with a big meal and a shopping spree. As a matter of fact, the Thanksgiving meal has given way to a full day of beating your friends and neighbors to the best bargains at Walmart, Target, and Best Buy.  If anything good came out of this pandemic it is that the brutal Thanksgiving shopping ritual has been curtailed.

Since this year we are probably not going to be participating in a shopping day or having a big family party, perhaps we can find time to remember all of the things for which we are thankful. In the next few weeks spend some time thinking about the fact that we have plenty of food, a good warm home, clean water, personal safety, access to good healthcare, and the ability to use our automobiles to get where we need to go.

After you have given some thought to all the good things you enjoy,  spare a thought for those who do not have access to health care, clean water, adequate housing, enough food, or  warm clothing. This is where being a Rotarian becomes so very important.

November is Foundation Month for a reason. While we are being thankful, sharing our good fortune feels like the right thing to do. The money you give to the Rotary Foundation is a contribution of your good fortune. The amount you give to the foundation isn’t as important as the fact that you share what you have with others. Through grants large and small the money is used to fund sustainable projects that will make lives better.

This year we haven’t had much to celebrate. Let’s make the 2020 Foundation Campaign one in which every Rotarian contributes. We can celebrate our good fortune by helping those less fortunate.

Another Community Service note of May 2020
---- by Meena Patel
Community Service Chair, 2019-20
Dear Rotarians,                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     So much is happening in the world!
So much is happening in our country!
So much is happening in our communities!!!!

---- And so many are trying to find ways to help. Rotarians are trying to do their best as well.

? The question is, “What is that best right now”? ---- Especially when we are locked down in our homes. We do not have a concrete idea what needs to be done. How do we evaluate the needs, work on a plan and execute the service project?

At present there are more questions than answers as the situation is fluid, we are in the pandemic period, researchers and healthcare workers are putting their heads, their hearts and everything they have to study the behavior of this Corona virus in order to guide the community as to how we could contain the virus, or get rid of it. Can we develop herd immunity towards this virus? What is the end game and what is post-covid community going to look like?

Daily rise in covid-19 cases causing deaths and painful devastation of the families on one hand and economic devastation of the community on the other, both realities are racing against each other in opposite directions, compounding the miseries of our communities at an alarming pace.

Businesses are still not operating in full swing, schools and colleges closed, those who have jobs have hard time taking care of their children as schools and daycare centers are closed. Many families cannot afford to buy the food because no income or the food prices are high. Smaller communities have more seniors who are disproportionately affected. Mental health in general is deteriorating.

Girard-Liberty Rotarian, Anthony D. Giampetro turns 100
Congratulations to Girard-Liberty Rotarian, Anthony D. Giampetro, who will celebrate his 100th birthday on June 9, 2020.

Help celebrate Anthony's 100th birthday by sending him a birthday card at:  Girard-Liberty Rotary Club, P.O. Box 141, Girard, Ohio  44420.

Tony was president of his class when he graduated from Youngstown East High School in 1938. Later, he served proudly with the US Army Air Force for 3½ years during World War II.  He was a Ground Crew Mechanic, working on single engine fighter aircraft.  At various times, he was based in England, Tunisia, Algeria, Sicily, and mainland Italy.

After his military service, Tony attended Youngstown College (now Youngstown State University) and graduated in 1949.  Not long afterward, he would become a principal in the accounting firm of Reali, Giampetro, and Scott.  He has long since retired, but to this day, he still performs tax service for some of his long-term clients.  He is also retired from volunteering with Trumbull County Mobile Meals.

Tony was married to his beloved wife Rosemary, from November 28, 1946, until her death on October 18, 1994.  They have one daughter, Annette, who is married to Robert Meek.  Tony has two grandsons and two great grandchildren.

Tony lives in Youngstown, but has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Girard-Liberty for 37 years.
