As an educator I always viewed the beginning of September as the beginning of a new year, which it is for many folks. School starts; Friday football is a weekend happening, along with other fall sports; and community activities start up from a summer hiatus. There’s a real sense of energy as communities come alive after the summer. Sunday School and other religion affiliated activities are back in session along with music, dance and other lessons.
For two months our Rotary year has been in full swing. Presidents and boards are planning events for the 2016-2017 year and also plan for the District Governor’s visit. The diversity of the clubs in District 6650 is refreshing. I have so enjoyed my visits and mini board meetings with the many talented Rotarians and trust that I have not been a burden.
The energy of the club members and their love for Rotary is palpable. I look forward to continuing my visits during the next two months. I will also continue to encourage Rotarians to participate not only in the Foundation Centennial celebration in Cleveland on 23 October, but especially in your clubs in November.

Louisiana under State of Emergency: Rotary Can Help
From CNN: The catastrophic flood devastating Louisiana is now the worst natural disaster to strike the United States since Hurricane Sandy. "Thousands of people in Louisiana have lost everything they own and need our help now," said Brad Kieserman, the Red Cross' vice president of disaster services operations and logistics.
"This disaster is the worst to hit the United States since Superstorm Sandy, and we anticipate that recovery will cost at least $30 million -- a number which may grow as we learn more about the scope and magnitude of the devastation." In one part of Livingston Parish, more than 31 inches of rain fell in 15 hours. The US Coast Guard, National Guard, local emergency responders and even neighbors have helped rescue more than 30,000 residents and 1,400 pets.
November Club Celebration: DG Sieglinde has been visiting the clubs in our district and hinting at our upcoming Foundation Centennial Celebration to be scheduled by each club during Foundation month in November.
Each club is to show a special video, purchase a celebration cake, sign a birthday card which will be sent to Ghana Obaatan Women’s Hospital, auction off a Centennial bottle of wine, and participate in a new Paul Harris Fellow Challenge. We raised $25K last year with that contest.
October 23rd, Cleveland Celebration: There are still concert seats available for the Foundation Celebration in Cleveland, October 23rd, featuring the Cleveland Orchestra. Dinners seats are also available for donors to the Foundation (please complete the Pledge form by September 30th: http://rotary6650.org/pledge.pdf ). There are also sponsorships available. Preparations are in progress for the 2016 Interact Conference. The Conference will be held on Saturday, 5 November 2016 at the Salem Community Center. Registration and a continental breakfast will start at 8:30 with the program beginning at 9:00 and ending at 1:00.

The Youth Exchange Program is well underway for 2016-17. On Saturday, August 20, the Inbound students had their orientation and first overnighter at Camp Stambaugh. This year’s class of Inbound students represents the following 13 countries: Denmark, Italy, France, Brazil, Switzerland, Belgium, Taiwan, Mexico, Germany, Chile, Spain, Argentina, and Japan. District 6650 has 14 Outbound students. They have been departing to their host countries since early July, with a few more to depart by early September.
The Youth Exchange Committee would like to thank the following Rotary Clubs for hosting Inbound students this year: Jackson Township, Canfield, Wooster, Canton, Poland, Boardman, Millersburg, North Canton, Sugarcreek, East Canton, Massillon, Louisville, Salem, Orrville, Minerva, Champion, and Dover. We know finding host families can sometimes be challenging so thank you for stepping up and agreeing to participate in the program.
