DG LINDA HENDERSON'S CLUB VISITS TO
THE ROTARY CLUB OF LOUISVILLE AND NILES

DISTRICT GOVERNOR'S CORNER - OCTOBER 2020
Linda Henderson
District Governor 2020-21

One of my favorite parts of October is Halloween. Perhaps because I spent a lot of my time in public schools I relate to the excitement and joy that kids feel when they get to dress up and parade around town in search of goodies. I even remember some of my most memorable costumes. I was a pumpkin, a witch, a spider, a doctor, and, as an adult, I went to a party as Big Bird. It didn’t work. I was too short, and I think I traumatized the toll taker at the Newell Bridge between East Liverpool and West Virginia. Something about a big yellow wing coming out of the window of my green, 1975 Ford Pinto upset the poor man.

Fred and I love treating the kids who come to our door on Halloween. We talk with them and enjoy their antics. The little ones are so excited. I do wonder what kind of pain there would be if I had to watch one of those beautiful children crippled or killed by a disease that is completely preventable.

October is also Polio Month. This month when you are making plans to treat your neighborhood kids, spare a thought, and perhaps a few dollars, for the children in Pakistan and Afghanistan who are not yet free of the Wild Polio Virus. We are so close to eradicating this disease that it doesn’t make sense to stop now. We have to complete our mission of ending Polio.

In other news, we are having club assembly on October 14, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. This is a fun and enlightening event open to all Rotarians. We will be targeting ideas to help clubs thrive in the pandemic. The Rotarians in 6650 have been working and meeting all year to make this world a better place. Our Club Assembly will address the challenges we are facing. It is on line, no traveling, it is free, and it will be mostly small interactive groups.

Please join us. You can register on this website. I hope to see all of you at Club Assembly.

District Rotary Foundation
NOVEMBER IS ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH:

Obviously, this is a challenging year to raise funds for any organization. Over the past 5 years, our District has raised more than $200,000 for The Rotary Foundation to do “Good in the World.”

This year we are adding to our annual Paul Harris Fellow Challenge a new contest called Double Your Donation which will allow donors of $100 or more to GIFT their matching Foundation Points to another Rotarian in their club. You both receive the donor credit toward your first or next Paul Harris Fellow recognition level.

In mid-November, all Rotarians in the District will be receiving a personalized letter showing past donations, PHF status, and a summary of club members from which to select for matching funds for donations of $100 or more. A group of Rotarians can work together to honor a special Rotarian by providing matching funds to that person.

I will handle all the paperwork including allowing for recipient notification, if requested, as I have most recipient’s email from The Foundation database.

OHOLI VILLAGE – MAKING A DIFFERENCE:

I put this together for the Zone about one of our Global Grant Projects. I sometimes forget what a difference we can make in the world even to a small village in the middle of India.

Our District:

District 6650 in Northeastern Ohio, receives a small amount of Rotary Foundation District Designated Funds (DDF) each year (approximately $50K) which it uses to partner with a number of local and international projects by providing small DDF sums as seed-money toward larger Rotary Foundation Global Grants.

We have had recent Rotary Global Grant projects providing funding for classroom-based libraries for elementary schools in Cam Lo, Vietnam; advanced life support equipment and education in Honduras; farmers cultivating equipment and goat farming in Oholi, India; portable computers for schools in Marthwada and Palghar, India; mini-science centers in India; a Boys & Girls Club van in St Thomas; a hospital-based dialysis center in the Philippines; our Military Family Veterans Center in Louisville, Ohio; and GiGi’s Playhouse for Down Syndrome children in Canton, Ohio.

Operation Warm
Operation Warm, Inc. was founded in 1998 by Dick Sanford, a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Longwood, PA which still supports the project to this day.  Operation Warm has provided over 2.5 million coats and operates in all 50 states.  96% of all funds raised go directly toward the purchase of coats.

These new coats provide more than just warmth.  They allow children to attend school on a regular basis, they improve their self-esteem, and allow their families to spend money on other critical essentials such as food, medical care, rent and fuel.

Operation Warm was introduced to District 6650 in 2012 by then DGE, Debbie Esbenshade from The Rotary Club of Youngstown and Clubs in Division 1a in conjunction with the NE Ohio Ford Dealers Association and Cumulus Broadcasting.  That first year, 703 coats were distributed to our local Salvation Army in Youngstown.

Operation Warm was the District Project in 2013 during Debbie’s year as District Governor and clubs in our district, along with the NE Ohio Ford Dealers raised almost $63,000 and provided over 3,200 coats to children throughout District 6650 --- in fact, EVERY club in our district participated that year!!  Since 2012, participating clubs in our District have provided over 18,000 new coats to kids in our district!

If you would like information as to how your club can participate to impact children and/or adults in your community, Contact PDG Debbie Esbenshade  (330-727-6315).
