 One of the things that I feel badly about is the way that we jump from Halloween into the Holiday Season.  It is as if Thanksgiving is just a day off with a big meal and a shopping spree. As a matter of fact, the Thanksgiving meal has given way to a full day of beating your friends and neighbors to the best bargains at Walmart, Target, and Best Buy.  If anything good came out of this pandemic it is that the brutal Thanksgiving shopping ritual has been curtailed. 
 
Since this year we are probably not going to be participating in a shopping day or having a big family party, perhaps we can find time to remember all of the things for which we are thankful. In the next few weeks spend some time thinking about the fact that we have plenty of food, a good warm home, clean water, personal safety, access to good healthcare, and the ability to use our automobiles to get where we need to go.  
 
After you have given some thought to all the good things you enjoy,  spare a thought for those who do not have access to health care, clean water, adequate housing, enough food, or  warm clothing. This is where being a Rotarian becomes so very important.     
  
November is Foundation Month for a reason. While we are being thankful, sharing our good fortune feels like the right thing to do. The money you give to the Rotary Foundation is a contribution of your good fortune. The amount you give to the foundation isn’t as important as the fact that you share what you have with others. Through grants large and small the money is used to fund sustainable projects that will make lives better. 

This year we haven’t had much to celebrate. Let’s make the 2020 Foundation Campaign one in which every Rotarian contributes. We can celebrate our good fortune by helping those less fortunate.

District Rotary Foundation - Update
PAUL HARRIS FELLOW CHALLENGE UPDATE:
 
Thank you to all who supported our Paul Harris Fellow Challenge. This year, we raised nearly $25,000 for the Foundation, and over the past 4 years, we have raised more than $100,000 to “Do Good in the World.”
 
The District Wine Challenge last month generated an additional $17,000, and we are hosting an Art Auction on February 1 to provide even more support for the Foundation. Check out www.Rotary6650.org for more information.
 
Remember, half of the funds donated to The Foundation are used by the World Fund to sponsor international projects, and half of the money comes back to the District in 3 years to provide Global Grant Support and Local Grant Support. We all SHARE the donations made by our members.

International Assembly Update from DGE Dan Morgan
Every January District Governor Elects meet for International Assembly.  This year we met in San Diego, Ca.  It is an intense week of training, updates, speeches and gathering ideas from leadership and other DGEs from around the world.  One of the highlights was learning from President Elect Mark Maloney our new theme for 1919/20.  It will be:  Rotary Connects the World.   Mark has challenged us to:
  1. Create new membership models
  2. Open new paths to Rotary membership
  3. Build new Rotary and Rotaract Clubs
  4. Involve our families
  5. Build a viable path to Rotary Leadership                                                                                                                                                                                               
We were reminded that innovation must be our core principle.  We must be open to change.  The innovation must be disruptive to prevent Rotary from becoming another Kodak story.   The Theme Rotary Connects the World is an excellent theme.  During International Assembly we did have leaders from around the world who joined together, exchanged ideas and committed to action.   Perception generally does become reality.  We certainly do unite people to create lasting change across the globe in our communities and in ourselves.   
Rotary is the platform for members to create the change they wish to see in the world. We are so fortunate to have so many members from our district step up and serve on district committees. Their sole purpose is to help each of us accomplish our goals and objectives.  In conclusion somethings seem to be timeless.  I would like to leave you with words from Paul Harris.
  “Rotary must continue to pioneer or be left in the rear of progress. “

Short-Term Youth Exchange Opportunity
Hello. My name is Kelli Hulea and I'm reaching out about our short-term exchange program, in hopes that you can help communicate the following information to your club members and contacts at your local high school. As a former long-term exchange student (2011-2012) and as the chair for Rotary District 6650's short-term exchange program (STEP), I'm working alongside Brent Rice and Bill Wood, chairs of the Youth Exchange Program, to spread the word to interested students across the district.
 
Our long-term exchange program has been around for many years, but the option for the short-term exchange is fairly new, becoming available to our district just several years ago. As you know, our district is spread out, so it would be much appreciated if you could help us to share this information. I'd also be glad to come to one of your meetings to do a presentation if you see it as valuable. Or, you can call anytime if you have any questions.
